New marathon world record*
Geoffrey Mutai’s 2:03:01 this morning in Boston is the fastest marathon ever by nearly a minute. It tops Gebrselassie’s 2008 mark, and is the largest drop in the world record in more than 40 years.
I’ve run two marathons. My best time is 4:29:15. Geoffrey here did it in less than half of that time. I mean, I’m not a world-class-athlete, but I’m no slouch either, and yet he runs it a full two hours and 26 minutes faster than me. That’s crazy ridiculous! How much longer can world records be set? Is it feasible to think that a marathon - 26.2 miles - could be run in less than 2 hours?!?
*Correction to earlier post - this is not technically a new world record because it wasn’t on a sanctioned course, but still, it’s at the very least the fastest Boston Marathon ever run, which is still insane.
