Today is Memorial Day. I’m thrilled to have a day off of work, and was going to use my time to post about the cookout I attended this weekend, but then it occurred to me that this day is about more than not-working and eating grilled goodness. I’m not going to go as far as pull a Tiny Tim and remind you of the meaning of the Christmas, but today is really about the soldiers and to me that means Runts.
My brother is currently on a base in Mississippi waiting to be shipped out to Afghanistan. When we asked what he’d like in a care package he said the usual stuff - toiletries, books, DVDs - and Runts. I didn’t think anyone had eaten Runts since 1988 at the public pool during rest period, but apparently that is what my brother craves when being sent off to war, so Runts he shall receive! Maybe it’s nostalgic for him, as we spent every day during the summers between 1983 and 1998 at Spring Valley Pool where our biggest concern was how much money our parents had left for us to buy hot dogs and candy. Or maybe he likes to pretend he’s getting a serving of fruit as he pops candy bananas and strawberries in his mouth…Whatever it is, I hope that this Memorial Day while you BBQ or go for a swim something nostalgic makes you smile and remember a more carefree time as well!
