Why Having Obese Kids Shouldn’t Cause You To Lose Your Kid. Two Harvard researchers have suggested, in certain circumstances, placing extremely obese kids in foster care. I find this idea insane for a number of reasons:
- There’s no guarantee a child’s eating habits will be improved under the supervision of a foster parent.
- Anyone with kids, and anyone who has had to take kids to birthday party after birthday party, or seen the public school put candy machines in the hall, knows that your child’s eating habits are not always strictly within your control.
- Even if foster care helped a child’s obesity, do you really think it would cancel out the crippling emotional fallout of being taken away from your family?

I’ll add to this the following:
Who says a foster family would feed the kid any healthier? Instead, families could be mandated by the courts to attend nutritional counseling, or something where the entire family is making a change in diet. The chances are that the whole family is overweight, not just the child. Education is the key!!
